ABOUT
Influenced by the natural world, Claudia’s unique work engages with a continuous exploration of forms and textures. The artist draws inspiration from her connection to the natural world, the observation of the detail and the vast, the process of construction and deconstruction that originates landscapes, imbuing her pieces with a sense of place and belonging. The vitality of the unglazed clay present in archaeological ceramic is another element that greatly impacts her practice. Ancient pottery that celebrates the rawness of the clay body and the soil from where it comes from, it is also reflected in her work.
Like in the environment, intuitive and repetitive actions guide the artist’s process where clay is constantly altered, torn, and manipulated to originate pieces that move away from the perfect circular form.Ancient hand-building methods alongside innovative mark-making techniques developed by the artist place the unglazed clay body on the forefront of her creations. Her work evolves in a slow and deliberate sequence, echoing in many ways the labour of a landscaper; to make the “landscape” of the clay more attractive by altering the existing design and adding ornamental features.
The artist creates clay forms that celebrate the authentic beauty of clay. Fissures, tears, irregularities and a true sense of the natural emerge from Claudia’s contemplative work, reflecting the constant flux that occurs in the natural world and ultimately, her homage to clay’s ancestry.
